MEETING MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER at 7:41pm by Gerry Schmanke
PRESENT: Suki Willison, Gerry Schmanke, Joe Kurtz, Bill Beasley, Gib Ramirez, and Karen Osborn
ABSENT: Katie Willison, Pat Nichols, Luan Betts, Rod Peterson, and Kenny Jones
TBS MEMBER PRESENT: Patti Beasley
APPROVAL OF MINUTES – Bill moved that the minutes of April 2 be approved, Gib second; approved.
SECRETARY/TREASURER’S REPORT – Karen reported 119 memberships. She has been keeping current with membership emails and Facebook posts and events. She had a handout showing Profit and Loss from April 2 – May 7. Bill moved that the Secretary/Treasurer’s report be approved, Joe second; approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Tulips @ Twilight, Old Prairie Town, April 7th
Very cold evening, Grand Marquis moved into the small white church. Acoustics were great. Suki suggested when a band is hired for 2 hours or under, no breaks should be taken.
Brown V Board Mural Paint Party, Saturday, May 12th, noon – 4pm
Noon dedication; 12:45-1:30 line dance; 2:00 – 4:00 pm Norman Jackson (TBS). TBS supplies PA. We will put up TBS tent with membership info, Suki will check on available electricity, and ask if we may sell shirts.
Summertime Blues
May 16th – Ric Barron Band, youth act Rachel Taylor, Karen asked we each “share” Fb event, and she will contact newspaper to be listed in Top Ten This Week.
June 20th – Ghost Town Blues Band, with Kara Grainger, youth act Morgan and the Freeman
TBS 10th Anniversary celebration – start time will move up to 6:00pm. July 18th – Heather Newman Band, youth act Shawna Wilson. TBS sound system needed?
Aug. 15th – The Symbols from Ft. Collins, CO, youth act Karli Swedlund
Mulvane Art Fair, June 2 & 3, we provide tent, PA, etc,
Saturday Noon – 12:45: Nichols & Millspaugh
1:15 – 2:45: Nick Moss Band, featuring Dennis Gruenling (will teach harmonica class)
3:15 – 5:00pm: The Drunken Hearts
Sunday Noon – 2:00: Nick Moss Band, featuring Dennis Gruenling
2:00 – 4:00: Grand Marquis
Topeka Gives 2018, Tuesday, June 5th, 7am-6pm
Check-in begins at 8:00am Monday, June 4th, Karen will be there to get table. We’ll share with ARTSConnect. Karen will email schedule to work event. Karen & Suki will decorate table, buy candy.
TBS 10th Anniversary
To be celebrated in conjunction with June 20th S.B. Suki said 10th anniversary shirts are in. Joe checked on special order cookies – they are $1.00 each. Karen will look into buying bulk from Sam’s. We should look into a 10th anniversary sign.
SOKBF, Wednesday, July 4th, Reynolds Lodge, Lake Shawnee
Karen had Organizational List from previous years. Items mentioned to add or correct to list: our name should be on all promotional material; Gib will give Karen name of Nat’l Anthem female singer; Stage crew needs to bring their own workers for load-in/load-out; More picnic tables are needed around food truck area; the Rowing Assn will handle parking at no fee; Gerry will get handouts to campground check-in booth; Karen will send email asking for volunteers – volunteers are not needed in the tent area until noon, but are needed at the gate at 8am. Suki was contacted by KC Blues Society asking if they could set up a tent, promote their membership levels and sell shirts. After some discussion, it was decided to decline their request since our festival is our biggest membership drive and merch sales.
Fiesta Mexicana, July 12th
Suki booked Jeremiah Johnson, 7:00 – 8:30pm, Gib said he will be on the Street Stage.
Midwest Blues Retreat, Aug. 18th
Suki is working on a Drum Clinic and Songwriting Clinic.
Blues Challenge/Annual Membership meeting, Sunday, Aug. 19th
Karen will send email to membership looking seeking entrants.
Committee Reports:
Blues in Schools – nothing new
Organizations – nothing new
Membership Survey – Luan absent – no report
Corporate Relationships – nothing new
Trailer for equipment storage and transport
Suki suggested the Board buy the trailer from Bill for $400. Bill said he also installed new lights at $32. Gerry moved the Board purchase trailer for $432; Gib second, approved. Karen wrote a check for $432 payable to Bill Beasley.
TBS Golf Tournament
Kenny absent – no report.
NEW BUSINESS
Truck Donation
Suki advised Jim Beilman would like to donate a truck to the Blues Society. After some discussion, it was decided to decline this offer so as not in incur repairs, insurance, tags, and property tax costs.
Keyboard for band
Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps asked if they could purchase a keyboard for their use, and store it at Uncle Bo’s. Bill made a motion; Gib second; approved.
